Low Cost Spay - You Get What You Pay For

The majority of low cost spay and neuter events are put on by local shelters in order to give some relief to pet owners that are struggling, especially during these dire economic times. Those that do not necessarily need this cost effective service are taking advantage of these low cost spay and neuter clinics as well. I do not see a problem with this practice because all pet owners are allowed to participate; however, I want people to know that you get exactly what you pay for, and here is why.

When you go to your regular veterinary general practitioner, it is usually because you trust them, know they care about you and your pet, and you value their experience. This is not to say that the veterinarians that volunteer their time for low cost spay clinics are not compassionate or trustworthy; rather, it is the assertion that many of the veterinarians that volunteer for these events are recent veterinary school graduates.

If you go to your regular vet, the prices may be higher, but I must remind you that you are paying for their experience.

The large majority of private practice veterinarians that have opened their own clinics have been practicing for years. They had to learn the ropes, and strove to become as skillful as possible before they opened their own practice.

The "new" veterinarians that make up a sizeable portion of those vets that dedicate their time to offer much needed low cost services are inexperienced. You pay less not only because of government grants and sponsors for such programs, but because these veterinary professionals are looking to practice. As terrible as it sounds, volunteering for a shelter run clinic event is a perfect way for veterinarians to gain experience.

The veterinarians that practice here to offer the low cost procedures are immmune from any kind of malpractice or legal repercussions due to the anonymity of their services. In private practice I have assisted in surgeries on a regular basis to fully remove the ovaries when the veterinarian at the low cost clinic failed to do so the first time. This is a common occurrence by veterinary standards.

Do not get me wrong, these low cost services are vital for pet care for many communities, but you may want to think twice about saving a buck or two if you can afford it. Sometimes, it is your pet that may pay the price, especially if it has to undergo corrective surgery months down the line.
